2012: On February 17, 2012 it was announced that Abe Thompson would be returning for his third season with the club. In addition to playing, the 30 year-old forward will also serve as assistant coach to Daryl Shore for the 2012 season.

Thompson scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 3-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on June 2nd at Lockhart Stadium.

2011: Abe Thompson re-signed with the club before the start of the 2011 NASL season. He missed the opening stages of the season through injury, but returned towards the end of May as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with the Montreal Impact to rapturous applause from the home fans at Lockhart Stadium.

In his first start of the season, Thompson scored the opening goal of a memorable comeback victory against the Puerto Rico Islanders on June 4. Thompson and Brian Shriver formed one of the league’s most feared strike partnerships that saw 18 goals produced between them. On October 1, 2011 Thompson scored his second hat-trick with the club in the 5-0 thrashing of FC Edmonton in the first round of the playoffs.

Thompson played 25 games in all competitions with the Strikers in 2011. He scored seven goals, and added two assists.

2010: On March 18, 2010 Thompson signed with Miami FC (now the Fort Lauderdale Strikers) of the USSF Division 2, after playing five seasons in MLS.

Thompson enjoyed a prolific first season in South Florida, as the second-highest scorer on the team with nine goals. His six goals scored in September, including a hat-trick against AC St. Louis, helped Miami FC to a late playoff push, though the team ultimately fell just short.

Professional: FC Dallas selected Thompson in the second round (16th overall) of the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft. He spent four seasons with Dallas, appearing in 69 games, scoring 14 goals, and recording 11 assists before being traded to the Kansas City Wizards in September of 2008 for allocation money.

Thompson scored seven goals in sixteen games with the Wizards, before returning to Texas, signing with the Houston Dynamo in the middle of the 2009 MLS season. He played just one game with the Dynamo and was waived at the end of the season. Real Salt Lake selected Thompson in the waiver draft, but he was forced to look elsewhere for a club, as the MLS side did not offer him a contract ahead of the 2010 season.

Amateur: Like many of his current teammates, Thompson played PDL soccer during his college years. He suited up for Chesapeake Dragons as well as Boulder Rapids Reserve between 2002 and 2004.

College: Abe Thompson enjoyed a stellar college soccer career, playing four years of at the University of Maryland. In his first season he led the team in scoring with 13 goals and five assists. By the end of 2004, Thompson had scored a total of 43 goals and 26 assists in 79 games for the Terrapins.

Thompson broke numerous team records and collected several accolades at the University of Maryland including; NSCAA third team All-America selection, All-ACC first team honoree, Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week, Maryland/adidas Soccer Challenge Offensive MVP, ACC Player of the Week, co-MVP of the Maryland/adidas Classic, Virginia/Nike Classic all-tournament team and was a member of the College Soccer News team of the week. He was named a Herman Trophy semifinalist in both 2003 and 2004. Thompson is the school’s all-time leader in points with 112.

Youth: Earned the Golden Boot Award at the 1999 U.S. U-17 National Championship playing for club side Braddock Road Warhawks. Thompson also won the 1999 Don Greer Cup whilst playing for them.

International: Abe Thompson was one of the most promising young American forwards  of his generation. It took him all of three minutes to score in his international debut with the U.S.Under-17 Men’s National Team.Thompson represented the United States at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship in New Zealand, playing alongside such figures as Oguchi Onyewu, DaMarcus Beasley, and Landon Donovan. He earned six caps and scored one goal with the U-17s.

In 2000, at just 18 years of age, Thompson began playing with the U.S.Under-20 Men’s National Team.
