Fort Lauderdale Strikers defender Scott Gordon recorded his first professional goal on Saturday night. It was all the more special because it was Gordon’s first professional game and he is playing for his hometown team.
Gordon grew up in Boca Raton about 15 minutes down the road from Fort Lauderdale’s Lockhart Stadium. As youngster he played for Team Boca, and for Spanish River High School. As a Center Back he always had, even at a young age, a great command of the game and strong foot which made him an asset on set pieces.
Gordon’s college career at Lynn University in Boca Raton was outstanding by any measure. At Lynn, he started 28 games, and scored five goals while recording four assists. Two seasons ago, Lynn scrimmaged Miami FC . In that game, Gordon scored three goals 4-1, and caught the eye of the local professional team.
This past January, Gordon was invited to play with the Strikers in an exhibition match versus the US U-20 team. The MLS Scouting Combine was taking place the same week in Fort Lauderdale and several scouts from MLS teams attended the match. Gordon’s standout performance helped make him the only NCAA Division II player selected in the 2011 MLS Superdraft, being selected 53rd overall by FC Dallas.
Gordon returned home to play with the Strikers right before the season kicked off on April 9th. This past Friday, versus Puerto Rico, Coach Daryl Shore brought him late in the match and he provided a spark. Gordon’s 89th minute goal put the Strikers ahead late and ultimately resulted in the team securing a valuable away point at the home of the league leaders.
“I’ve grown up with Scott playing both with and against him for years. He’s a local guy with deep local roots so it’s incredible to see him begin to reach his dreams here with his hometown team,” said Stefano Bontempo Marketing Manager for the Strikers.
