Charity Match Announced

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers will play in an exhibition soccer match against several notable international tennis superstars, including Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, on Wednesday March 23rd at 7 P.M. The match will be held at Ransom Everglades High School, 3575 Main Highway, Miami, FL 33133.

“We are all touched and affected by the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  Through this cooperative effort, with many of the world’s greatest tennis players, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers hope to host an unforgettable soccer showcase for our community and fans as we extend our hearts and hands toward our friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.  Raising money for the Red Cross Relief Fund while entertaining fans on the pitch is just another reason soccer is considered The Beautiful Game.” Said Commercial Director Tommy Knapp.

Eleven ATP tennis stars will come together to play against the Strikers to raise money for Japan and their relief efforts. All proceeds and donations from the match will go directly to the Red Cross and their ongoing efforts to help Japan. This match was organized by the tennis players out of concern for the people of Japan affected by this tragedy.

The Strikers will also sell season tickets and single game tickets to their home opener on April 9th at Lockhart Stadium at this event. Fifty percent of all ticket revenues generated through sales at this event will be donated to the Red Cross to benefit the relief effort.

“I am very concerned for the people of Japan and think it is only right that we do whatever we can to help those in need.  I would love to see all of Miami support both events by showing up at the Ransom Everglades High School soccer field at 7:00 pm to cheer on your favorite team and attending the dinner afterward,” said Novak.

Strikers resign Abe Thompson

Strikers resign Abe Thompson

The Strikers announced today that they have resigned forward Abe Thompson for the upcoming 2011 season. Per team policy, terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

“Anytime you can bring back a MLS veteran who was your leading goal scorer last season it’s a positive move for the team. We will look to Abe for veteran leadership and hope he will find the same success he had last season.” Said Head Coach Daryl Shore.

Thompson, 29, a Virginia native, began his college career at the University of Maryland where he spent 4 seasons. He had a stellar career for the school as he was named Hermann Trophy Finalist in 2004 and 2005. After college, FC Dallas drafted Thompson in 2005 where he spent four years making 69 appearances and scoring 14 goals. In 2008 he was traded to Kansas City and spent one season but was soon traded again to Houston. Last March, Miami FC signed Thompson where he made 26 appearances and scoring 9 goals in his first season.
