The Fort Lauderdale Strikers have continued their trend of discovering talented players in South Florida with the signings of Gonzalo De Mujica and Manuel Gonzalez. Both are from Broward County and attended high schools in the area. The Strikers have recently found great success with local players after the breakout rookie seasons of Mark Anderson, Aly Alberto Hassan and Darnell King with all playing key roles for the Strikers in 2012.
“Manny is a local player who trained with us all season last year,” said Strikers head coach Daryl Shore. “He will add depth to our central midfield and we are excited he will be on our NASL roster this season and be available for selection.”
Gonzalez, 22, attended Northeast High School located less than two miles from the Strikers home field at Lockhart Stadium. After graduating he played for Florida Gulf Coast University, before spending this past season training with the Strikers as a non-roster player.
De Mujica, 23, joins Fort Lauderdale as a free agent after playing with Orlando City’s U-23 PDL team in 2012. The Argentinean-American attacking midfielder played his college soccer at Stetson University after graduating from Cypress Bay High School in Broward County.
“Gonzalo is another local product who has a very encouraging future,” said Shore. “He came through our open tryouts this year, though we had seen him play last year. He will be an exciting player to watch for us, and should bring much needed depth to our attacking group.”
Daryl Shore and the Strikers will continue their search for talent at the 2013 NASL Combine which begins on Friday, Feb 1 and continues until Sunday, Feb. 3. More than 60 players from around the world will compete with representatives from all the NASL teams in attendance to evaluate players and search for the next rising star. The NASL Combine is free and open to the public. Gates open at 1pm on Friday and Saturday and at 9:30am on Sunday.
