Fort Lauderdale Strikers continue to fight for a Soccer Bowl berth as they take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies
X Factor 2011 winner Melanie Amaro to sing the National Anthem
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (October, 2, 2013) – The Fort Lauderdale Strikers (3-2-4, 11 pts.) will face their in-state rivals, the Tampa Bay Rowdies (3-5-1, 14 pts.) in the first leg of a home and away derby, this Saturday, October 5th at 7:30 pm at Lockhart Stadium. The team will then travel to Tampa Bay to face the Rowdies next week.
Coming off a 2-0 loss to the Carolina Railhawks, the Strikers are still in the hunt for the Soccer Bowl, but they need to find some wins and a little help in the remaining 5 games.
“We’re in the middle of a difficult stretch, playing some of the top teams in the league,” said Strikers head coach Günter Kronsteiner. “We still have an opportunity to reach our goal, but we‘re going to need to work hard and continue working together. In the last game we had a good first half, but didn’t play well in the second. We need to change this if we’re going to get some wins.”
The Strikers and Rowdies have a special connection, with history that goes back to the 1970’s with an interstate connection. During their run in the original NASL the Strikers and Rowdies were dead even with a head-to-head record of 11-11, showing how fierce it was. After 30 years the rivalry is still alive.
Since 2011, the Strikers have had success against the Rowdies at Lockhart Stadium, with two wins, two ties and only one loss.
X Factor 2011 winner Melanie Amaro will sing the National Anthem prior to the match. Amaro, was born in Fort Lauderdale and was raised in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
