Sunday, Jan. 29th marked the end of the 2012 Fort Lauderdale Strikers’ open tryout. More than 100 prospective players took part, some coming from as far away as Norway and Uruguay to showcase their talents to the Strikers’ coaching staff.
“It’s intense,” said 18-year-old Richard Uchoa, “the Strikers are a great team, everyone is fighting for a position.”
Players were looking to impress the coaching staff enough to be brought back into preseason camp. An invitation to camp could earn them a professional contract with the Strikers. Coach Daryl Shore was pleased with the amount of quality he saw in those who will be invited to camp which starts on Feb. 20th.
“You never know, maybe you find one or two players that are good enough, and give them a chance to make the roster,” said Shore.
Those hoping to make the team can look at the success stories of some current Strikers for inspiration. Last season, 20-year-old David Santamaria and Jamaican-international Lance Laing earned contracts with the Strikers upon discovery at an open tryout. Laing would go on to be named a member of the 2011 NASL Best XI, and will go on trial with the Columbus Crew of MLS in February following his exploits with the Strikers last season.
