Former Slovakia National Team Goalkeeper Brings Vast Experience to Roster

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla (July 8, 2014) – The Strikers are delighted to announce former Slovakia National Team goalkeeper Kamil Contofalský has signed with the club. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Kamil brings a ton of experience to the team and will be a huge help in the Fall Season,” said Strikers Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner. “He is very good in controlling the box and will be extremely helpful in organizing the back.”

The 36-year-old Contofalský has been identified by the club as the right man to replace former Bundesliga veteran Oka Nikolov in the Strikers goal. Like Nikolov, the 6'3” Slovak keeper brings vast experience in Europe to the position. Contofalský is the first Slovak to play in the North American Soccer League (NASL) in the Modern Era (since 2011).

The Strikers host Minnesota United FC in the opening match of the 2014 Fall season this Saturday, June 12, at Lockhart at 7:30pm ET. Contofalský is expected to start in goal.

Contofalský started his career in native Slovakia in 1995 with AS Trenčín and later MFK Košice before moving to the Czech Republic in 1999 to join Prague-based side Bohemians 1905. He spent four seasons with the club and earned his first cap for the Slovakia national football team in 2002. Contofalský went on to make a total of 34 appearances for his country over the next seven years.

In 2003 he joined Russian powerhouse Zenit Saint Petersburg. Largely a backup to Russian international Vyacheslav Malafeev, Contofalský was a member of the side that won several titles including the Russian Premier League (2007), Russian Super Cup (2008), UEFA Europa League (2007-08) and the UEFA Super Cup (2008).

After leaving Zenit in 2009, Contofalský had brief stints in Cyprus and Greece with AEL Limassol and Larissa. He returned to the Czech Republic in 2011 to become the starting goalkeeper for Slavia Prague, where he remained until the 2013-14 season.

The Strikers will open the Fall season at home as they take on the Spring champions Minnesota United FC on Saturday, July 12 at Lockhart Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the match start at just $12 in advance. Call 954-606-0400 or visit
