DAVIE, Fla. – The Fort Lauderdale Strikers defeated the Nova Southeastern University Sharks 3-1 in a preseason friendly match in front of a packed house at the NSU Soccer Complex on Saturday, March 22.
Goals from Fafà Picault, Yaikel Perez and trialist Sean Barrett gave the Strikers another comfortable preseason victory.
It didn’t take long for the Strikers to open the scoring. Mark Anderson hit the top of the crossbar in the thirteenth minute and Fafà Picault got a head on the rebound to put Fort Lauderdale in front.
Martin Nuñez and Aly Alberto Hassan also had chances for the Strikers, but the Shark’s goalkeeper made some strong saves. Hassan, who played four years of college soccer for NSU, was especially hungry to continue his fine preseason form with a goal.
The Sharks had a chance to equalize at the half-hour mark when NSU’s forward found himself alone behind the Strikers back line. Goalkeeper Lionel Brown closed the angle and forced the forward’s effort wide of the net.
After the interval the Strikers came out looking for more goals. Some crafty footwork from trialist Colin Murphy on the left created space for Yaikel Perez in the box. The Cuban went looking for goal but trialist Sean Barrett got the final touch on the ball to double the Strikers advantage.
Sharks midfielder Andrea Spuntarelli cut the Strikers lead in half in the 67th minute with a beautiful volley off a cross from Nicola Brivio. The Strikers restored the two-goal cushion ten minutes from time when Perez received a lofted pass from Carlos Salazar and was able to dribble around the defenders and beat the keeper.
