The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced the signing of Mitchell Lopez for the 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) season. As per club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lopez, 20, was a participant in the Strikers open tryout this past February. After impressing the coaching staff at the tryout Lopez was invited into preseason camp with the Strikers before signing a professional contract with his hometown club.

“Mitchell is a very hard-working young man and shows a lot of promise,” said Strikers Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner. “He impressed us at the tryout and had continued to give his all for us in preseason.”

Lopez has appeared in several preseason games for the Strikers already, getting time at both center back and holding midfield. He scored a memorable volley from outside the box in the 5-1 win against Florida Atlantic University on March 16.

Born in Opa-locka, Fla. to a Brazilian mother and Cuban father, Lopez moved around during his youth and lived in South Florida, Brazil and Uruguay.
