The Strikers will take on the Laredo Heat in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers enter the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition Wednesday, May 28th at Lockhart Stadium at 7:30 p.m. when they take on the Laredo Heat SC of the Premier Development League (PDL).  Should the Strikers win, they would then take on the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the fourth round of the US Open Cup the week of June 10-18. The overall winner of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup earns a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Strikers are coming off a heart-breaking 3-2 loss against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday. After going up 2-0, the Strikers lost a man to a red card in the 35th minute and were forced to play a man down the rest of the way.  The Rowdies held a relentless attack throughout the match and despite 13 saves from Strikers keeper Oka Nikolov, they were able to score 3 unanswered goals, including a goal in extra time.

The game will be a rematch of last year's second round match when the Strikers faced the Laredo Heat at Lockhart Stadium and played them to a 1-1 draw in regular time. The Strikers went on to win the game on penalty kicks as Strikers goalkeeper Matt Glaeser was able to stop two Laredo shots in a row and Toni Stahl clinched the win for the home team. The Strikers then went on to take on FC Dallas of MLS and after going into the locker-room with a 0-0 tie, they gave up two second-half goals to the MLS squad and were eliminated from the US Open Cup 2-0.

The Strikers are 2-2 overall in U.S. Open Cup action, defeating the two PDL teams they have faced, and losing to the two MLS teams they played against.

The 101st edition of the tournament features 80 teams, an increase from the then-record 68 that took the field last year.
