Darnell King Becomes Strikers Regular Season Appearance Leader

23 year-old tallied a modern-era club record 65th NASL appearance in the 2-0 win against San Antonio

History was made last Friday night.

Starting at right defense in the Strikers' 2-0 win over San Antonio Scorpions, Darnell King entered the club's record books. He was appearing in his 65th North American Soccer League game, becoming the regular season appearance leader of the modern-era Strikers (since 2011).

“It's a great accomplishment,” said the 23-year-old King. “I'm glad I'm healthy and available to play in every game.”

King, in his third season with the club, has spent his entire professional career in Fort Lauderdale. The former FAU forward was discovered by the coaching staff at the 2012 NASL Combine and signed his first professional contact after impressing during preseason.

A fan-favorite, King is known by the Strikers faithful for his dedication and willingness to make sacrifices and work hard for the team. A forward turned defender, King has played at nearly every position for Fort Lauderdale before cementing his place as the first-choice right defender.

“Wherever the coach wants to put me on the field I've been able to adapt and give my all at that position. I want to win The Championship. I think the team is on the right path to doing that right now.”

What does the future hold for King? While happy here in South Florida, he stresses that all players want to play at the highest possible level.

“I'd love the opportunity to play in a first division, whether that's overseas or here in the States. Also my dream is to play for the national team.”

Ambitious? Yes. Unrealistic? No. If there's anything Strikers fans know about the club's new appearance leader is that he is a competitor with the attitude and work ethic to succeed.

“The sky is the limit, so I shoot for it.”

Note: Former Strikers defender Toni Ståhl holds the club record for total appearances in official competitions (a figure which includes playoffs and U.S. Open Cup appearances) with 73 matches played. King, (currently on 69 total appearances) can eclipse Ståhl's record before the end of the season.
