Caio Zanardi

Head Coach and General Manager

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers announced the appointment of Caio Zanardi as head coach and general manager on December 2, 2015.

Zanardi joined the Strikers as general manager in July. He helped engineer a mid-season turnaround for the club that reached the NASL Championship Semifinals. In addition to assembling the 2016 roster, Zanardi will lead an expanded soccer department, oversee all aspects of player development, and shape the club’s youth soccer programs.

The Brazilian’s credits include certifications in countries with two different philosophies and distinct playing styles. Zanardi earned his A License in Brazil, as well as an FA International License in England. He has studied and learned at the hands of Carlo Ancelotti, Louis van Gaal, Luiz Felipe Scolari, and Fabio Capello.

Prior to joining the Strikers, Zanardi spent three years with the Brazilian Football Confederation (Confederação Brasileira de Futebol) as head coach of the Brazil under-17 national team, posting a 40-9-6 (W-T-L) record in 55 matches. Under Zanardi, Brazil was crowned champions of the 2015 South American Under-17 Football Championship, earning qualification to the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Brazil and Zanardi also won the 2014 Nike International Friendlies, culminating with a 4-1 victory over the United States. Brazil swept the tournament’s individual awards, with players claiming the Golden Boot, MVP, and Golden Glove, along with Zanardi earning recognition as best coach.

Following a playing career in Brazil with São Paulo FC and Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, Zanardi began managing in 1999 as head coach of the S.E. Palmeiras under-17 team. Zanardi worked his way up the ranks and, in 2003, at the age of 29, he became the youngest coach in Palmeiras B history. Zanardi led Palmeiras to a state championship in 2001.

Between 2004 and 2006, Zanardi served as U-20 and first team head coach of Clube Atlético Juventus and Pão de Açúcar. In 2007, the Brazilian coached Paulista F.C. before joining Al-Nasr Sports Club, a top team in the United Arab Emirates. Zanardi served six years as soccer director for the Dubai-based club.

The 42 year old speaks Portuguese, English, French and Italian.

Phillip Dos Santos

Assistant Coach

The Strikers announced Phillip Dos Santos as assistant coach on December 15, 2015. Dos Santos, 37, joins the Strikers from 2015 NASL Championship finalists Ottawa Fury FC, where he served as technical director and assistant coach for two seasons. Phillip worked alongside his brother Marc, who was named 2015 NASL Coach of the Year.

Born in Canada and raised in Portugal, Dos Santos played until age 27 before following in the footsteps of his father and brother into the coaching ranks. Dos Santos’ experience includes time in Europe, North America and South America.

Dos Santos holds an “A“ License from the European Union of Football Association (UEFA) and has worked with Canada’s national teams. This includes serving as a scout for the under-17 team, assistant coach of the U20s, and head coach for the U21 national team. He credits time with storied Portuguese club FC Porto as formative to his coaching philosophies.

Dos Santos speaks English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. He holds Canadian and Portuguese citizenship.

Cassiano Costa

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Cassiano Costa--no relation to Bruno Costa--joins the Strikers as strength and conditioning coach after spending four years as assistant head of physical conditioning at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Costa has served as head strength coach for Corinthians and Palmeiras in Brazil, and has worked with European sides AFC Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur.

A native of Brazil, Costa has a Ph.D. in sports biomechanics. He holds masters degrees in sports physiology from the University of São Paulo and sports injury prevention from the University of Galicia. Costa speaks five languages: English, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Bruno Costa

Assistant General Manager and Head of Scouting

The hiring of Bruno Costa as assistant general manager and head scout boosts the Strikers player development and recruitment efforts. With a resume boasting roles as head scout for the entire Brazilian Football Confederation (Confederação Brasileira de Futebol) since 2012 and general youth manager of Fluminense and Figueirense in Brazil, Costa brings vast experience to the position.

Costa attended high school in Florida and earned sports management degrees at both Florida International University in Miami and Universitário da Cidade in Brazil. He received specialization in soccer technical management from Universidade do Futebol in 2013, an M.B.A. and specialization in sports management from the CBF in 2015.
